Permit to Carry  The process is easier than you think.

Applicant Must:

• be a citizen, a naturalized citizen or a resident alien;
• be a resident of Polk County;
• be twenty-one (21) years of age;
• provide a valid driver's license or other picture ID with current address provided by the State of Iowa.

All orders require a valid email address to communicate the status of your order.  You will be notified via email whether your application has been approved or denied.  If approved, you will be required to come in person to the Sheriff's Headquarters at, 5995 NE 14th Street, Des Moines, IA 50313 to show your valid form of identification and training documentation from a class with a NRA instructor or a DD214 that states honorable discharge.  As required by the State of Iowa, you must provide training documentation to receive a Permit to Carry.   The address on your application must match the address on your identification.

A new permit to carry requires a fee of $50 and a valid driver's license or non-operator I.D. that contains your photograph and current address issued by the Iowa Department of Transportation. The permits are valid for five years from the date of issue.  If the permit is denied, $35.00 will be reimbursed to the applicant. The Sheriff's Office will retain the remainder for processing and handling of the application.

Renewing your current permit to carry requires a fee of $25 and a valid driver's license or non-operator I.D. that contains your photograph and current address issued by the Iowa Department of Transportation. The permits are valid for five years from date of issue.  If the renewal is denied, $15.00 will be reimbursed to the applicant.  The Sheriff's Office will retain the remainder for processing and handling of the application.

A duplicate permit to carry requires a fee of $25 and a valid driver's license or non-operator I.D. that contains your photograph and current address issued by the Iowa Department of Transportation.

Handgun Purchase Permits.  You must have a permit to purchase.

A permit to acquire weapons requires a fee of $25 and a valid driver's license or non-operator I.D. that contains your photograph and current address issued by the Iowa Department of Transportation. A permit to acquire is valid for five years from the date of issue.
